WICHITA, Kan. — Rising University of Memphis women's tennis junior Katherine Cao has turned in an impressive start to the offseason after Week 1 of the ITA Summer Circuit.
Cao, who capped her sophomore season with the Tigers on a 12-match win streak, captured the doubles title alongside partner Jaci Cochrane of Rutgers. Cao also earned a pair of singles victories to reach the semifinal before losing to Caitlin Calkins of Purdue.
Having played together in juniors before their collegiate careers, Cao and Cochrane teamed up to collect a trio of wins on their way to the doubles crown. After a first-round bye, the duo downed Ashley Jacobson and Taylor Cheung-Damonte in the quarterfinals and followed with a victory against Isabella Dunlap and Brooke Thompson to reach the championship.
The tandem continued the momentum in the finals with an 8-1 victory against Jessica Anzo of Oregon and Anna Riedmiller of Denver.
In singles, Cao also earned a first-round bye and advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight-set win against Washburn's Kinsey Fields. Cao then defeated Cochrane, 6-1, 6-1, to reach the semifinals.
The ITA Summer Circuit was created to provide college players the opportunity to compete in organized events year-round. The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of 49 events over six consecutive weekends, beginning in mid-June and continuing through the last weekend in July.
