Memphis Drops Season Finale to Wichita State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis and Wichita State combined for 19 runs on 31 hits as the Shockers beat the Tigers 13-6 in the season finale Saturday at FedExPark.
The Tigers end the season with a 20-36 record and 5-19 mark in American Athletic Conference play.
Seniors Taylor Bobo, Kyle O'Keefe, Tyler Webb, Connor Alexander and Carlos Williams played their final games for the University of Memphis.
Kyle Ouellette was 3-for-5 with one RBI and Cale Hennemann went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Williams was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
The teams went back-and-forth early before Wichita State pulled away in the middle innings.
Wichita State scored two runs on four hits in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Tigers.
Memphis grabbed an early lead with three runs in the third inning. Carlos Williams started the inning with a double before Cale Hennemann drove him in with an RBI single to start the scoring.
With two outs, Nick Vaage and Alec Trela both walked to load the bases. Kyle O'Keefe delivered a two-run single to right field to drive in the go-ahead runs.
The Shockers blew the game open with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead and extend the lead out to 13-3 with seven runs on eight hits in the sixth inning.
Memphis came back to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the lead to 13-6 but that was as close as the Tigers would come.
Hunter Smith started and pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Five other Tiger pitchers entered the game, including Alex Hicks, Alex Smith, Blake Bennett, Colton Neel and Joshua Scheer. Neel pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
