Borja Martin leads Memphis with an even-par 71
PALM HARBOR, Fla. – University of Memphis golfer Borja Martin fired an even-par 71 Sunday during the open day of the American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship presented by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.
But despite the solid play from Martin, tied for second individually with eight others, the Tigers struggled. Memphis finished at 18-over 302 and finds itself tied at ninth with UConn.
The AAC Championship is being played at the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. The champion earns the league's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
No. 21 USF is the first-round leader at even-par 284, five strokes ahead of UCF (289), six ahead of SMU (290), seven ahead of Cincinnati (291) and eight ahead of both East Carolina and Wichita State (292).
Cincinnati's Davis Baxter is the individual leader after shooting 1-under 70, the only sub-par round Sunday.
Only two other Memphis golfers – Chase Harris (74) and Brad Bawden (76) – shot sub-80 rounds. Rodi Vlasveld and Nick Giles each finished at 9-over 80.
All three days of the Championship can be followed via Golfstat.com, while the final round of the Championship will be carried on the American Digital Network beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
