MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With the regular season slate in the books, the Memphis women's tennis team shifts its focus to the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships.
The Tigers (15-7, 3-3) drew the No. 7 seed in the tournament and will face No. 10 Cincinnati in the opening round on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
"We like our seeding," head coach Hayden Perez said. "We're going to play Cincinnati, which is one of our seven losses this year, so we're hoping to avenge that. There will be some different matchups in our lineups. I think our kids are going to bring some good energy."
Hosted by SMU in Dallas, the Tigers' portion of the bracket also includes a first-round match up between No. 6 Houston and No. 11 UConn. No. 2 Tulsa and No. 3 Wichita State earned first-round byes in the lower half of the bracket.
Memphis capped the regular season on Saturday with a 6-1 win against WKU. The victory extended the squad's win streak to seven. Although the Tigers have found their stride entering the postseason, Perez said the team's perspective for this week's tournament will be similar to the rest of the schedule.
"One thing we pride ourselves on is treating every match the same. If we were playing a top-10 team, we didn't highlight it. If we were playing a team that was ranked below us, we didn't highlight that," Perez said. "We have the same approach to every match we play, and that has brought us a consistent level of competition. We're on a roll and we'll keep treating every day the same."
Cincinnati has won the previous three matchups, including a 5-2 decision against the Tigers earlier this season. Memphis holds a 2-4 record in the AAC Championships and a 10-9 ledger against the Bearcats in the all-time series.
