Softball Drops Close Contest To No. 22 Mississippi State

Tigers outhit the ranked Bulldogs, led by Kyler Trosclair Klatt’s three hits in the leadoff spot
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The University of Memphis softball team outhit the No. 22 Mississippi State Bulldogs Tuesday evening but fell by a score of 3-1 in Starkville, Miss. The Tigers drop the season series to the Bulldogs and fall to 30-15 on the year.

Mississippi State put up two runs in the second and one in the third to take an early lead over the Tigers. Memphis wasn't going down without a fight and proved that by outhitting the No. 22 ranked Bulldogs, 8-5.

The Tigers scored one run in the top of the fifth in an attempt at a rally, but stranded a pair of runners at second and third. In the contest, Memphis had a total of eight runners left on base compared to just four by the Bulldogs.

Molly Smith picked up the loss against Mississippi State after putting in 3.0 innings of work in the circle. Mariah Nichols came in relief and hurled three hitless innings for Memphis.

Kyler Trosclair Klatt moved within two of matching the all-time hits record at Memphis with a game-high three hits. The one-two-three hitters for the Tigers combined for six hits. Baylee Smith was responsible for the RBI-single in the fifth to score Trosclair Klatt.

Bottom 2 – With two outs, three straight hits led to two runs scoring for the Bulldogs. A double to left field is what put runs on the board. (2 runs, 3 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base)
Bottom 3 – Mississippi State led the inning off with a double to left center. Two batters later, a single to right center scored the third run of the game. (1 runs, 3 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base)
Top 5 – Memphis got a run back in the top of the fifth with three-straight singles from Kyler Trosclair Klatt, Delaney Smith, and Baylee Smith. Baylee Smith's single to left field drove Trosclair Klatt home. (1 run, 3 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
