Tigers score game-winning in the ninth
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Memphis and Middle Tennessee went back-and-forth and the Tigers came away with a 6-5 win Tuesday at Reese Smith Jr. Field. The Tigers (5-7) scored the winning run in the top of the ninth and held on for the win.
The Tigers have beaten the Blue Raiders twice this season and will square off again Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Danny Denz put together a great start, pitching six innings for the second-straight week. The sophomore lefty struck out a career high nine and allowed just two hits. Denz also got a big double play in the fifth and managed to pick a runner off in the game.
Denz was unlucky not to come away with the win, departing the game after the sixth inning with a 4-3 lead.
Nick Vaage and Alec Trela came out swinging to start the game to give Memphis a 1-0 lead. Vaage singled up the middle to start the game and Trela drove him in with an RBI double down the first base line.
Vaage finished the game 2-for-4 in his first start in the leadoff spot of the batting order.
Memphis extended the lead to 2-0 in the third after Trela walked to get on base for the second time in the game and later scored on a wild pitch.
Middle Tennessee got a run across in the fourth inning after a hit batter ended up scoring on a balk. Denz was able to strand a runner at third base with a strikeout looking to end the frame.
The Tigers extended the lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning after loading the bases with one out. Nick Vaage came through with a clutch two-run single to drive in Jason Santana and Zach Mettetal.
The Blue Raiders cut into the lead again in the bottom of the sixth, smacking a two-run home run to left field. The hit was just the second of the day off of Denz.
Memphis tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth. The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs and a big error at shortstop allowed on run to come home.
The insurance was not enough though, as Middle Tennessee tied the game up 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth. The Tigers seemed to be out of the inning but a pop up fell in on the infield to score a run. The game-tying run then came home on a hit batter.
Memphis rallied back in the ninth though as Ouellette was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch.
Riley Cabral finished the game on the mound to record the win.
