Kendall Lee hits first career grand slam, Molly Smith throws complete game
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the first time at the Tigers Softball Complex, the University of Memphis softball team defeated the Ole Miss Rebels by a score of 9-3 Tuesday evening. The only other win against Ole Miss in program history was the first meeting at a neutral site on Feb. 12, 2006. The Tigers improve to 20-7 on the year with another single-game midweek coming up on Wednesday evening.
Â
Ole Miss used three hits in the top of the second inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead over the Tigers. Memphis proceeded to score one run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead in half before the Tigers erupted for a six-run third inning to take the final lead of the ball game.
Â
Having already taken the lead with two runs scored in the bottom of the third, freshman Kendall Lee ripped a grand slam to put Memphis up, 7-3.
Â
The Rebels answered with one in the fourth, but a strong pitching effort by senior Molly Smith combined with solid defense kept Ole Miss from crossing home plate again. The Tigers then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
Smith won her 12th game of the season and finished with 11 strikeouts. Regan Hadley finished with a team-leading two hits for the Tigers and in all, Memphis registered seven hits on the evening.
