Feb 21, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Knights sweep the series against the Tigers with win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior guard Brea Elmore became the 25th member of the University of Memphis 1,000-point club Wednesday evening in a 63-40 setback to UCF at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Elmore's three-pointer in the second quarter lifted her over the milestone.
Â
How It Happened
Neither team earned more than a three-point lead over the other until less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter when the Tigers rattled off a 12-0 run. The run was ignited by a pair of Alana Davis lay-ups and capped by Jada Stinson's second three-pointer of the game to put Memphis up 19-10 at the first break.
Â
UCF answered with a 12-0 run of its own through the heart of the second quarter. Turnovers plagued the Tigers in the first half and as a result UCF had 14 points off turnovers that helped build to a six-point, 30-24, halftime advantage. Brea Elmore knocked down a three-pointer in the second quarter, which marked her 1,000th career point at the University of Memphis.
Â
The Knights continued to lock down defensively against the Tigers while building their lead gradually in the third quarter.
Â
Trailing by 14 with 10 minutes to play, Memphis put together a 4-0 run to cut the UCF lead down to 10, 48-38. Elmore's three-pointer with 8:13 remaining proved to be the closest Memphis would come to the visiting Knights for the rest of the contest.
Â
Turning Point
After a 12-0 run by Memphis to close out the first quarter, UCF produced a 20-5 second quarter to take a six-point halftime lead. The Knights continued to build upon their lead throughout the second half.

I look at Brea's development and maturation process and to me that is what is so rewarding with all of these athletes. We're certainly going to miss her as she can light up the scoreboard.
Â
Next Up For The Tigers
Memphis will celebrate its seniors on Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. start against Tulsa. Cheyenne Creighton, Brea Elmore, and Breigha Wilder-Cochran will be recognized in a pregame ceremony. The game will stream on the Memphis Tiger Network and can also be heard on 91.7 FM WUMR with Jeff Brightwell on the call.
