Feb 10, 2018 | Softball
Tigers record season-high 14 hits and a complete game from Katie Brignac
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Memphis softball team improved to 3-0 on the year after a 9-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn at the FGCU Kickoff Classic Saturday morning. The Tigers handled business in just six innings en route to the victory.
"I thought that we came out today ready to pick up another win," said head coach Natalie Poole. "We saw that both offensively and with our pitching. Defensively, we were able to play behind Katie to keep runners out of scoring position. Offensively, we had contributions from our whole lineup including bench players in pinch-hit situations."
Memphis scored early and often with the fourth inning posing as the only clean defensive inning for LIU Brooklyn. The Tigers added two more triples to the 2018 total including a pinch hit triple in Kendall Lee's first collegiate at bat in the bottom of the sixth inning. In pinch-hit situations, Memphis went 2-for-3 today. With runners on base, the Tigers hit .500 as a team.
As a whole, the Tigers registered 14 hits in the win, a season-high. Four players finished with two hits each including Brooke Lee, who scored a team-high two runs. Delaney Smith registered two hits and two stolen bases for the Tigers.
Katie Brignac, the third Memphis pitcher to earn a start this season, pitched a complete game with two strikeouts and no walks allowed. She finished with just 65 total pitches in her first win of the year.
