Tigers Thrive In Exhibition Victory Over LeMoyne-Owen

Jamirah Shutes leads Memphis with 24 points
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team used a 63-point second half to propel itself to a 91-44 victory over LeMoyne-Owen Saturday afternoon. Freshman guard Jamirah Shutes led all players on the floor with 24 points in the lone exhibition game of the season for Memphis.

Three players scored in double-figures by the Tigers. In addition to Shutes, Taylor Barnes added 17 while Alana Davis scored 14. Davis also led Memphis with eight rebounds. Tiger newcomers Camille Buckhanon and Gazmyne Herndon added nine and eight points, respectively.

Memphis jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first quarter. Senior forward Jasmine James started the contest off with four straight points to get the Tiger offense going.

LeMoyne-Owen battled back in the second quarter to pull within two of Memphis at the half, 28-26.

Leading by three with 6:30 remaining in the third, Taylor Barnes ignited a 20-3 Memphis run to take a 20-point lead over the visiting Magicians. Barnes was responsible for the first seven points of that run including her second three-pointer of the contest.

Barnes' scoring boost after the intermission led to a 27-point third quarter by the Tigers.

Memphis continued to improve as the game progressed with a 36-point fourth quarter. Shutes scored 15 of her 24 points in the fourth including two made three-pointers.

Buckhanon also scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter while Herndon contributed six. They both played in all 10 minutes of the final quarter.

For the game, Memphis shot 57.6 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from beyond the arc. Four separate players made a three-pointer, led by Shutes' three. The Tigers finished the game with 22 assists with just 13 turnovers.
