Women’s Basketball Tips Off Regular Season With Jackson State

The Tigers are 7-3 in home openers under the direction of Melissa McFerrin
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Months of anticipation are over as the University of Memphis women's basketball team tips off the 2018-19 season at home against Jackson State Wednesday evening. The game is slated to start at 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
GAME ONE
Memphis vs. Jackson State
Tip-off: 7 p.m.

Memphis competed in an exhibition game last Saturday against LeMoyne-Owen and the Tigers came out victorious in the lopsided, 91-44, victory. Although it was two-point game at halftime, Memphis rattled off 63 second half points and shot 78 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter. Freshman guard Jamirah Shutes led the way with a team-high 24 points including 15 in the fourth quarter.
In addition to Shutes' performance, Camille Buckhanon and Gazmyne Herndon had strong debuts for Memphis. Buckhanon scored nine points and pulled down four rebounds in 11 minutes of action. Herndon added eight for the Tigers including six in that commanding fourth quarter.
Junior guard Taylor Barnes helped ignite the Memphis offense in the second half against the Magicians. Her seven-straight points in the middle of the third quarter propelled Memphis to a 20-3 run which ultimately turned into a 47-point victory. Alana Davis also put in productive minutes for Memphis, coming just two rebounds shy of a double-double. She finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
In home openers under the direction of 11th year head coach Melissa McFerrin, the Tigers are 7-3 including wins in the last five. Against Jackson State, the Tigers are 8-1 and have won the last seven meetings dating back to Nov. 23, 1991.
A Look At Jackson State
Jackson State finished the 2017-18 season with a 15-13 overall record. Tomekia Reed has taken over as the head coach of Jackson State. She was previously an assistant for Jackson State from 2006-08.
Christina Ellis led Jackson State in 2017-18 with 13.3 points per game as a junior. The top returning rebounder from a year ago is Marneisha Hamer, who led the squad with 5.4 boards per contest.
Jackson State is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
