Jamirah Shutes and Taylor Barnes lead the offensive attack for Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Clutch free throws down the stretch by Taylor Barnes and Jamirah Shutes helped lead the University of Memphis women's basketball team to a 68-67 victory over Jackson State Wednesday evening at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Â
Barnes scored 16 points from the Tigers including a 10-for-12 effort at the charity stripe. In her collegiate debut, Shutes led Memphis offensively with a floor-high 20 points.
Â
After a slow start offensively, Memphis used a 23-point second quarter to take a 40-25 lead at halftime. A three-pointer by Shutes with 3:08 left in the first quarter ignited a 13-4 Memphis run to put the Tigers up six, 21-15, over Jackson State.
Â
Memphis shot 50 percent from the floor including a 3-for-4 effort from beyond the arc in the second quarter.
Â
Jackson State chipped away at the Memphis lead in the third and entered the final 10 minutes of play down three to the Blue and Gray.
Â
Trailing by four with 2:09 remaining, Barnes went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to cut the Jackson State lead to two. She proceeded to hit one more along with a free throw by Shutes to tie up the game with 1:19 on the clock.
Â
A Shutes rebound on a missed Memphis three-pointer by Jasmine James quickly resulted in a jumper outside the paint with 30 seconds to play to put Memphis back on top by two. Shutes' jumper proved to be the final lead change as Memphis held on for the 68-67 victory.
Â
Sophomore forward Alana Davis finished one point shy of her fifth double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. The 12 rebounds matched her career-high set twice last season.
Â
Head coach Melissa McFerrin is now 8-3 in home openers at Memphis and the Tigers improve to 9-1 all-time against Jackson State.
Â
Memphis resumes play next Monday evening on the road against Arkansas State. Tip-off against the Red Wolves is slated for 5:30 p.m. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow the Tigers on Twitter and Facebook at @MemphisWBB.
