Red Wolves Down Tigers In Hard-Fought Battle Monday

Shutes leads Memphis with 18 points, Coomber pulls down career-high 10 rebounds
JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought road game at Arkansas State Monday evening by a score of 76-66. Memphis falls to 1-1 on the young season.
Freshman guard Jamirah Shutes scored a team-high 18 points to lead Memphis for the second consecutive game. Junior Kiana Coomber pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.
Jada Stinson opened the contest up with a short jumper after Memphis forced an Arkansas State turnover. In all in the first half, Memphis forced 13 A-State turnovers.
Memphis opened the contest on an 11-2 run, capped by Jasmine James' first three of the contest. The Tigers opened the contest making their first three three-pointers.
A-State saw one lead late in the first quarter, but the Tigers rattled off an 8-2 run to go back up five over the Red Wolves. Shutes played a crucial role in the offensive attack for the Tigers, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor with a team-high 14 first half points.
A-State opened the second half on a 7-2 run to regain its first lead over Memphis since 1:27 left in the first quarter. Stinson's first three of the game put the Tigers back on top.
Stinson's trey ignited a 6-2 Memphis run to put the Tigers back up eight, 50-42, with 2:20 left in the third quarter.
Arkansas State chipped away at the Memphis lead in the fourth and a Kayla Williams three-pointer with 5:00 remaining gave the Red Wolves their third lead of the contest.
Home court advantage played in favor of the Red Wolves down the stretch. Arkansas State closed the game out on a 25-6 run to pull away from the Tigers.
For the game, Memphis shot 44.1 percent from the floor and outrebounded A-State 36-32.
