BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In their second weekend of fall action, the Memphis women's tennis squad collected five wins on Friday to open the Samford Round Robin.

The Tigers began the day with a win in doubles against UAB and then added four singles wins against host Samford with four matches going the distance.

"I am very proud of the team today. We fought hard on every court," head coach Hayden Perez said. "Our preparation in tough conditions really helped us today. It was hot and humid out there and the kids handled it well. Overall, I was happy with today's performances and looking forward to tomorrow."

Freshman Hannah Davies partnered with sophomore Katherine Cao to notch the Tigers' win in doubles behind a 6-2 victory.

In singles, sophomores Laura Bente and Lina Hohnhold picked up straight-set wins. Bente defeated Samford's Grace Jennings, 6-3, 6-2, while Hohnhold downed the Bulldogs' Holly Horsfall, 6-1, 6-1.

Cao added her second win of the day in a three-set thriller. Despite dropping the first set in a tiebreak, the Lenexa, Kan., native rallied to take the next two frames, 6-2, 6-4.

Davies also registered her second win of the day in singles, defeating Samford's Cindy Oest, 7-6, 7-5.

The Tigers resume action at the Samford Round Robin on Saturday with doubles action beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
