Tigers climb in national polls
Oct 02, 2018 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's soccer continued its climb in the national polls, checking in to the top 25 in both the United Soccer Coaches poll and TopDrawerSoccer poll Tuesday afternoon.

After appearing in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings for the first time since 2012 last week, the Tigers moved up two spots to No. 18 this week. In TopDrawerSoccer, Memphis made its first appearance this season at No. 24.

"Being nationally ranked means you have a massive target on your back," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I've been here a long time, and we've been ranked as high as third in the country. The reason you play is to be the best, and we're always striving to get better."

The Tigers are The American's lone representative this week in the United Soccer Coaches poll and highest ranked team in TopDrawerSoccer.

Tuesday's rankings also mark the first time since Nov. 8, 2011 the Tigers have appeared in both polls for the same week.

"An expectation we've tried to instill in this program is to be a top 25 team," Monaghan added. "I'm proud of our girls. As their coach, I hope this gives our kids the confidence moving forward but also makes them realizes there is a bigger target on their back. We try to hold this program accountable to put in the work to be the best. I'm proud of where we are, but we have a lot of work ahead of us."

In their last outing, the Tigers started conference play with a pair of wins against Cincinnati and ECU. Following a week off, Memphis returns to the pitch this week for its first league road trip. The Tigers will face Houston on Thursday at noon before capping the weekend with a Sunday matinee at SMU.
