Tigers fall in matches on road trip to Army, West Virginia

WEST POINT, N.Y. and MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – University of Memphis senior Leighton Dempster tied a school record to highlight the Tigers' first road trip of the season last weekend. Memphis competed against Army West Point Oct. 13 and West Virginia Oct. 14.

Memphis, ranked No. 14 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) first regular-season poll, fell in both matches. The Tigers placed third in the Army West Point tri-match behind Ole Miss and the host school Saturday and followed with a setback to No. 2 nationally ranked West Virginia Sunday.

A week after setting career-highs in both disciplines and aggregate, Dempster tied a program record with a 596 score in air rifle in Saturday's Army West Point tri-match. Her 596 – also a career-high – tied the mark set by former teammate Haylea Broughton (2015-18), who shot a 596 in the discipline as a freshmen against Kentucky in January of 2015.

Tigers Tidbits

With her school-record tying 596 in air rifle, Leighton Dempster has recorded a 591 or higher score in the discipline 12 times in her career, including all three outings this season.
Dempster won the air rifle discipline with her 596 score in Saturday's tri-match. She edged out Ole Miss' Jillian Zakrzeski, who was second at 595.
In the Army West Point tri-match, Levi Clark placed fourth in air rifle with a career-high 589 score. His previous career-best was 588 twice at the 2018 NCAA Sectional Qualifier and against Navy in 2016-17.
With their aggregates from this weekend, Clark and Dempster have shot over 1165 aggregate scores in all three matches this season. Clark has 10 career performances of 1165 or higher aggregates, and Dempster has seven.
Clark was the team's highest finisher in smallbore at Army West Point, coming in fourth place.
Dempster (4^th), Clark (5^th) and freshman David Crenshaw (9^th) all finished in the top-10 in aggregate in the Army West Point tri-match.
In Sunday's match at West Virginia, Dempster was fourth in air rifle and Clark sixth in smallbore to lead the Tigers.
Four Tigers – Clark (6^th), Dempster (7^th), Matt Dorey (9^th) and Crenshaw (10^th) – placed in the top-10 in aggregate.
Crenshaw shot a season-high 578 in smallbore in Saturday's Army West Point tri-match.
Freshman Mark Meyeraan has improved his air rifle mark in each of the three matches this season. He shot a 567 in the season opener and followed with a 578 at Army West Point and a 582 at West Virginia.
