Tiger Tuesday: September 5

Top Five Tiger Headlines for Tiger Fans.

Good afternoon Tiger fans. This is Assistant Athletic Director Tammy DeGroff, back from an inadvertent bye-week with Tiger Tuesday headlines (first home game weeks are crazy y'all!) with headlines I thought you'd want to see this week.
1. Football Schedule Change
In case you haven't heard, the Memphis football game at UCF has moved up to Friday, Sept. 8th at 5:30 pm (CT) due to the possibility of Hurricane Irma tracking up the Florida coasts (be safe to all of our Tiger fans residing in Florida!). The earlier time allows UCF to host the game and then get their staff and team safely relocated if necessary. That is the result of conversations that have been on-going since Sunday. The one unresolved piece as I write this is the TV part. ESPNews was set to broadcast the game on Saturday. As of now, we're not sure what TV plans are (they have staff and equipment to get in and out of Irma's way as well).Â

2. Behind The Scenes with Tiger Football
Maybe you haven't noticed it the way that I have, but the sports media world has changed dramatically over the past few months. ESPN, Sports Illustrated, our local newspaper...lots of folks that covered sports have lost their jobs. One thing that has come out of that has been former SI writer Stewart Mandel becoming the Editor-in-Chief of a "premium subscription football site" as part of an existing online site called The Athletic (the football section is called The All-American). That features a lot of the long form writing that is no longer finding a printed home with as much regularity as it has in the past. The All-American sent writer Chris Vannini to Memphis during camp a couple of weeks ago and he has his behind-the-scenes story online HERE.Â
Â

2b. (because I feel like if I actually keep it to just five points for one week, it'd be very un-me-like)
On a related note, former Memphis Commercial Appeal reporter Phil Stukenborg (who, full disclosure, is doing some feature writing for our football game programs) really missed writing gamers, so he wrote one for the Memphis v. ULM football game. You can read it on his Wordpress site HERE. His post game story even included a quick hits section.Â
3. Women's Soccer Off to 5-0 Start
The women's soccer program went to Nashville last weekend and picked up two wins in the Music City Invitational. Memphis blanked Indiana, 2-0, Sunday to move to 5-0 on the year and are hosting a tournament of their own this weekend at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers host Rice at 7:30, Friday, then host Ole Miss, Sunday, at 7 p.m. If you haven't seen this team play, I'd encourage you to head out to Collierville to check them out this weekend. Admission to all Memphis home soccer matches is free. The team is up to #18 in the latest Top Drawer Soccer poll.Â
Â

4. Congrats to Arnica Zitting!Â
The senior women's cross country runner won the Brooks Twilight Classic on Saturday night. Her time of 18:01.43 for the 5K run over the Mike Rose Soccer fields marked the first time a Memphis women's runner won the annual season-opening event. On the men's side, sophomore Matthew Kamph (who interned with our SID office last year and was a spring game football stats superstar) finished 14th in 20:43.72 for the 4 miles. The squad is back in action on Sept. 16th at the Rhodes College Invitational (which if memory serves, is held at Shelby Farms).Â
5. Football Intro VideoÂ
If you weren't one of the brave (and wet) fans at the Liberty Bowl on Thursday night, you missed our intro video. We've uploaded it here for you to be properly prepared for the next home game against UCLA.Â
