Tiger Tuesday: August 22
Aug 22, 2017 | Tiger Tuesday
Headlines for Tiger fans every Tuesday at 2:00.

Good day Tiger fans! Assistant AD for Communications Tammy DeGroff here in the busy-week-before-football-home-opener with this week's Tiger Tuesday headlines.Â
1. Women's Soccer off to 2-0 Start
The women's soccer team is off to a 2-0 start and posted back-to-back 3-0 shutouts this past weekend at home against Samford, a team picked to win the its fourth straight Southern Conference title, and Little Rock, a team that plays a tough, defensive style. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard from Madison, Mississippi, was the American's keeper of the week after the two wins. Women's soccer is part of a soccer doubleheader against UAB on Sunday out at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The men's team will play their first match of the home slate at 5 p.m. and the women's match against UAB will follow 30 minutes after the men's match is complete. Admission is FREE, so come cheer on the Tigers!

2. Kroger Tickets Available for Football Opener
It's not often you have a press conference in the produce department (actually, it's happened twice now), but that means it's Kroger Ticket Time for Memphis Football. Thirty-six different Kroger stores (including the new one on Poplar for all you Midtowners) have $5.00 tickets for the home opener against UL Monroe. These tickets usually move fast and unlike past years, we won't have as many out there as we've had in the past (yeah season ticket sales!), so get yours early. The TV folks passed along a note that the official kick time will be at 8:15 pm with a possible five minute slide (which is if the game ahead of us moves slow).Â
Aside from the importance to our football team of having a great crowd in the stands, the Kroger ticket sales have a little extra motivation if you are still on the fence about going. One dollar from every ticket sold at Kroger benefits the Mid-South Food Bank, which combats hunger here in Memphis and in 31 counties in West Tennessee, Arkansas and north Mississippi. So if you know someone who is 'maybe' going to the game, tell them to stop by the customer service desk the next time they are at Kroger and get a ticket or two!Â

3. Pair of former women's basketball players sign professional deals.
Congrats to Ariel Hearn and Brianna Wright! They will be teammates in Germany playing for the Eintracht Braunschweig Basketball Club. The club, which is based in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, Germany, plays in the 2nd-highest women's league in Germany, called Damen Basketball Bundesliga. Their schedule begins in early October and runs through March. Viel Glück, Tigers!
4. Celebrating 901 Day?
Us too! The folks at Tiger Bookstore have made a $901 shopping spree available for any Memphis fan who makes a donation of $25 or more to the Tiger Scholarship Fund by September 1st (9/01). Your donation is used to fund the scholarship bills for our almost 400 student-athletes. The winner of the $901 shopping spree will be announced on Tuesday, Sept. 5th. To make a qualifying $25 gift, you can call the Tiger Scholarship Fund office at 901-678-2334 or you can submit it online HERE.Â
5. Volleyball and men's soccer opening the season on the road
Our volleyball and men's soccer programs are in camp mode right now as well. They both open on their seasons on the road. Volleyball will play three matches at the Eastern Illinois tournament next weekend, while men's soccer plays at Belmont Friday night for any Tigers in the Nashville area. They will open at home on Sunday night in doubleheader against UAB.
Volleyball has one afternoon scrimmage this week where we have invited Campus School kids to come enjoy lunch and see some volleyball. We are also inviting folks on campus who may have solar glasses leftover to bring them to Wednesday (tomorrow's) 11 a.m. match and we will give them to the Girl Scouts Heart of the South, who will see that they get to Astronomers without Borders for the 2019 Eclipse in South America and Asia in a program to spread STEM resources around the world.

5a. (Because for a third straight week, I'm bad at math).Â
Our women's golf team is three weeks away from their first tournament of the fall, but for their second tournament, there is a different component to it that I wanted to share. At the Lady Paladin Invitational hosted by Furman University, there is a non-profit challenge for each of the participating teams. Each team is being challenged to raise funds for the Golf Fore Africa Foundation, which provides clean water for families. Memphis is being challenged to raise money to build a well in Zambia. You can read more about the challenge here. Memphis is currently third behind Chattanooga and Daytona State.....a great reminder for our Lady Tiger golfers about the power of sports to make an impact in the bigger picture.Â
Have a great week! See you at a Tiger event soon and Go Tigers!
