Memphis Stands Third After First Day of Memphis Intercollegiate

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tiger men's golf team used a second-round 286 - the second lowest team round in the tournament - to move into third place and within four strokes of the lead at the 2017 Memphis Intercollegiate, hosted at Colonial Country Club.
Little Rock and Middle Tennessee are tied for the team lead with two-round scores of 577 on the 7,235-yard, par-72 course. Memphis' score of 581 stands four shots out of first place while Western Kentucky (583), Georgetown (584), Arkansas State (586), Stetson (588), UT Martin (592), Belmont (596), Fort Wayne (602), Western Carolina (611), IUPUI (614), and Tennessee State (615) round out the 13 teams in the field.
Newcomer Rodi Vlasveld individually leads the Tigers with a two-round score of 142 (72-70), which stands two strokes under par. In the opening round he had an even 18 holes with two birdies, two bogeys, and 14 pars. He came back in the afternoon finale with four birdies over a five-hole stretch, and ended the second round at two strokes under par.
Brad Bawden, a junior college All-American last season, is tied for 14th in the field with an even-par 144 on the day, carding rounds of 73 (+1) and 71 (-1).Â
Freshman Borja Martin - in his first collegiate tournament - carded rounds of 75 and 73 for a four-over 148, which has him tied for 24th in the field.Â
Both Chase Harris and Nick Giles rotated turns inside of the Tigers' top four on the afternoon, Harris' coming in the first round and Giles' in the second. Giles ended the day a stroke better than Harris 150-to-151, and had rounds of 78 (+6) and 72 (even). Harris' rounds were 75 (+3) and 76 (+4), while Giles is tied for 31st after two rounds, and Harris tied for 38th.
Playing as individuals in the tournament, Jordan Even is tied for 20th in the field with rounds of 71 (-1) and 76 (+5), for a first-day score of 147. Mikko Kauniskangas carded rounds of 77 and 74 to tie for 38th, as Colin Dubnik had even rounds of 76 and 76 to tie for 46th in the deep field.
The Tigers look to claim their own tournament victory tomorrow, with the scoring squad teeing off at 9:45 tomorrow morning.
