Women’s Tennis Gets Road Win at Xavier, 4-2

CINCINNATI – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (11-6, 1-0 American) picked up a 4-2 road win at Xavier (8-10), Friday, at the beginning of their final regular season road trip.
"This was a very intense match today," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "Xavier battled hard and every court was contested. I was proud of the way we competed. We were focused and determined and this team is fun to watch when we are doing that. It was a great match by both teams."
Memphis took an early edge in the match with 6-4 wins at two and three doubles for a 1-0 lead. But Xavier came back and tied it up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at two singles before freshman Clara Kuehn grabbed her first collegiate dual singles win, 6-4, 6-0, at six for a 2-1 Memphis lead. Hanna Sohn made it 3-1 Tigers with a three-set thriller, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, before Xavier's Sophia Abelson came back from a 6-4 first set loss at four singles to win 6-3, 6-3 in the second two sets to make it 3-2.
But senior Marta Morga closed out the win with a three-set win of her own. After winning the opening set 7-6, she dropped the second, 6-2, then came back with a 6-3 third set for to clinch the win.
Memphis will play its final regular season match Saturday at conference foe Cincinnati at 2 p.m. (ET). The Bearcats are coming in to the match off of a 4-3 win of their own against Xavier, Wednesday.
