Tigers sophomore sets another school record in the women's javelin.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Ashley Pryke has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is Pryke's second weekly conference honor of the 2017 outdoor season and also the second of her career.
At the Apr. 21-22 Red Wolves Open, Pryke won the women's javelin with a school-record 177-5 (54.09m) throw. Pryke's javelin mark surpassed her previous school record by nearly two feet (175-3; 53.41m). Her previous school record was set in the 2017 season-opening Rhodes Invitational Mar. 17-18.
Pryke first set the Tigers women's javelin record her freshman campaign in 2016. She had a 160-10 (49.03m) throw at the 2016 Joey Haines Invitational.
Her 177-5 (54.09m) mark in the event is fifth-best nationally. She also has the top mark in the American Athletic Conference by five feet over the league's second-best javelin throw.
Last weekend's javelin title was the sixth of her career. Pryke is a perfect 5-for-5 in javelin crowns in the 2017 outdoor season. Four of her five javelin marks in 2017 surpassed her best throw in 2016 (160-10; 49.03m). She won her first women's javelin title as a freshman at the 2016 Joey Haines Invitational.
At the season-opening Rhodes Invitational, the Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, native qualified for the 2017 World University Games in the javelin. The 2017 World University Games are scheduled for mid-to-late August in Taiwan.
The Tigers sophomore also competed in the women's shot put at last weekend's Red Wolves Open. She placed ninth in the event (41-9.75; 12.74m).
In the 2016 outdoor season, Pryke placed third in the women's javelin at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. She also earned a berth in the javelin at the NCAA East Preliminaries, where she finished 14th overall.
The Tigers men's and women's track and field squads return to action this weekend, Apr. 28-29 when they host their own Memphis Invitational. The meet, to be held at the Billy J. Murphy Track and Field Complex on the University's Park Avenue campus, begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. (CT). Saturday action starts at 11 a.m. (CT), with a Senior Recognition ceremony set for 12:20 p.m. (CT).
