Tyler Webb drives in game-winning run in ninth inning
JONESBORO, Ark. – Memphis got an outstanding team pitching performance and Tyler Webb provided some ninth-inning heroics to give Memphis a 2-1 win at Arkansas State Tuesday night at Tomlinson Stadium. The Tigers (23-19) have won back-to-back games for the first time in four weeks.
Alex Hicks started for Memphis and pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. The sophomore allowed just one hit in the outing. Connor Alexander was the first man out of the bullpen, tossing two innings and allowing just one run on two hits.
Alexander was the bridge to Blake Bennett and Colton Hathcock, who both pitched scoreless innings to close out the game. Bennett recorded his first Division-I win on the mound and Hathcock picked up his 11th save of the season.
Hicks had to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the first after walking one and hitting two batters. The first inning was really the only trouble Hicks faced all game.
Memphis snagged a 1-0 lead in the top of the second but it could have been more. Zach Schritenthal walked with one out and Kyle O'Keefe singled to put two on. The pair both stole bases to advance to second and third. Carlos Williams drove in Zach Schritenthal with an RBI groundout but on the play O'Keefe was thrown out trying to advance to third base.
Alexander was called on for his first relief outing of the season to start the sixth inning. The junior right-hander worked a scoreless sixth inning but got into trouble in the seventh.
Arkansas State tied the game up off of Alexander in the seventh after a lead-off walk came around to score on an RBI double. The Tigers were able to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring on the double though as Alec Trela made a great throw home to cut down the trail runner.
Jason Santana started the top of the ninth with a lead-off walk but it looked like Memphis may miss the chance to retake the lead. Both Schritenthal and Andy Bowman were retired for the first two outs in the inning.
With two outs though, Colton Neel kept the inning alive with a walk before Webb delivered the clutch go-ahead RBI single to left field.
Memphis hits the road this weekend for another tough test with three-game American Athletic Conference series at UCF.
