Tigers Topple Huskies in 2017 Opener
Jan 05, 2017 | Men's Basketball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Markel Crawford scored 19 points, Jimario Rivers 16 and Dedric Lawson 15, as the Memphis Tigers snapped a three-game losing skid to the UConn Huskies with a 70-61 win at FedExForum on Thursday night.
The Tigers led for over 30 minutes of game play on the day, and never trailed in the second half.
Memphis (11-4, 1-1 American Athletic Conference) dished out 18 assists while committing a season-low four turnovers and forcing 11 steals and 15 turnovers by the Huskies.
Lawson pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds, for his 12th double-double this season, and 29th over his year and a half with the program. He also dished out a team-best six assists, while he and Jeremiah Martin each nabbed three steals.
Martin added five assists for Memphis against zero turnovers, as Markel Crawford neared a double-double with eight rebounds. Crawford has hit 18-of-25 shots (72 percent) over his last two games.
UConn (5-9, 0-3 American) jumped ahead quickly in the game, and led by as many as five, four minutes into the contest. UConn's last lead came halfway through the first half when the visitors got a jumper from Steven Enoch to take a 15-13 lead.
Memphis answered with an 10-1 run to lead by seven, and the Tigers never trailed again in the game. The first half lead grew to as many as 10; however, a diving up-and-under lay-in by Jalen Adams cut the deficit to eight heading into the locker room at halftime.
The visitors kept the margin in single digits for the first minute of the second half; however, Memphis put its foot on the gas pedal, and gradually extended its lead to as many as 20 with 7:10 to play following a three-point play from Rivers. The Huskies fought back, and closed to within as few as nine, including the final margin after another Adams half-ending basket.
The Tigers won despite being out-rebounded 49-to-28, and had just one blocked shot in the contest.
Memphis returns to action on Sunday, January 8, when the squad travels to New Orleans to take on the Tulane Green Wave in a 2 p.m. tip-off in a game broadcasted on the American Sports Network and ESPN3.
