Watson Grabs Ranked Win to Start Season

Tigers grab five wins on day one at Alabama.
MEMPHIS – Junior men's tennis player Andrew Watson started his year with a win over #34 ranked Mazen Osama of Alabama, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to start the Alabama Four-in-the-Fall event, Friday. Watson's win was one of five on the day for the Tigers and one of four in singles play.
Freshmen Jan Palleres Monreal and Turner Voges also added to the win total on Friday, with each Tiger picking up his first collegiate singles victory in the first event of the fall. Palleres defeated Alabama's Ritchie Kruunenberg, 6-1, 6-4, while Voges downed Hayes Brewer from host Alabama, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Sophomore Felix Rauch also started his season with a singles win, defeating Alexey Nesterov, 6-4, 6-3.
Memphis' other win on Friday came in the White Doubles Flight, where Palleres Monreal teamed with sophomore Felix Rauch to down the mixed duo of Kruunenberg (Alabama) and Sebastian Rey (Tulane), 8-4.
Saturday's slate will include just singles play, as the tournament works around the home football game between the Crimson Tide and Kent State. Memphis will face opponents from Columbia in singles play, then will close the tournament on Sunday against foes from conference opponent Tulane.
