Three Tigers Track And Field Performers To Compete At NCAA Championships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Just like college basketball's March Madness extends into early April, college track and field's May Madness moves into early June with this week's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. The four-day national meet runs Wednesday through Saturday, June 8-11 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
University of Memphis seniors Carolina Carmichael and Luis Hanssler and freshman Jordan Wesner all "survived and advanced" through the NCAA East Preliminaries two weeks ago and now carry hopes for national titles in their respective events at this week's NCAA meet.
The ESPN family of networks is televising this year's NCAA Championships. ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU is scheduled to broadcast the meet's evening events, and ESPN3.com/WatchESPN begins live-streaming action in the early afternoon each day.
Carmichael is making her third-consecutive NCAA Championships appearance in the women's pole vault, and Hanssler is competing at his overall third NCAA Championships meet and his second NCAA men's decathlon. For Wesner, this is his first career – indoor or outdoor – NCAA Championships meet in the men's high jump.
Memphis' action at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships kicks off Wednesday, June 8 with Hanssler in the men's decathlon at 2:30 p.m. (CT). Hanssler, the three-time American Athletic Conference decathlon champion, competes in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters on the first day. The decathlon continues Thursday, June 9 at 12:30 p.m. (CT) with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.

Hanssler placed 18th in the men's decathlon at the 2014 NCAA Championships. He also competed in the long jump at the 2013 NCAA outdoor meet and finished 22nd.
Carmichael, a two-time United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America second team selection in 2014 and 2015, vies for the women's pole vault national crown at 7 p.m. (CT) Thursday, June 9. She qualified for the NCAA meet with her fourth-place finish (13-11.25; 4.25m) in the women's pole vault at the NCAA East Preliminaries May 27.
The past two outdoor seasons, Carmichael placed 10th in the pole vault at the NCAA Championships.
The Lake Forest, Ill., native won her third-straight American Athletic Conference outdoor women's pole vault title May 13. Carmichael also qualified in the women's pole vault for the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships and placed 15th.
Wesner opens his quest for the NCAA men's high jump title Friday, June 10 at 7 p.m. (CT). Wesner qualified for his first NCAA Championships appearance with a personal-best mark of 7-1.5 (2.17m) at the NCAA East Preliminaries May 28.
The Princeton, Wis., native was the American Athletic Conference runner-up in the men's high jump May 14. Wesner's 7-1.5 jump is the 28th-best nationally and also tied for fourth-best among the country's freshmen.
