May 25, 2016 | Baseball
Jake Overbey had a career-high three hits in loss
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Jake Overbey recorded a career-high three hits but Memphis couldn not overcome a pair of three-run innings by UConn as the Huskies won 6-2 in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Memphis (19-38) will now face No. 2 East Carolina (34-20-1) in an elimination game Thursday at 10 a.m. (CT). The Tigers lost two-of-three to the Pirates in the series played at FedExPark back in April.
The Tigers took an early lead on three singles in the top of the second inning with Overbey dumping an RBI single into left field to score Zach Schritenthal.
UConn took the lead on three two-out hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. A two-run single by John Toppa gave the Huskies the lead but some bad defense by the Tigers allowed a third run to come home.
The Huskies put three more on the board in the sixth to put the game away.
Brandon Grudzielanek led off the eighth with a double and moved to third on a groundout. He scored the Tigers' only other run of the game on an RBI groundout by Chris Carrier.
UConn starting pitcher Anthony Kay tossed a complete game, scattering nine Memphis hits and allowing the two runs.
Memphis starter Colton Hathcock logged five innings and took the loss. Colton Neel and Trey McNickle pitched in relief and kept the Huskies off the board.
