Chris Carrier drove in three runs in win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Chris Carrier had a solo home run and three RBI and the Tigers scored two runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 5-3 win over Cincinnati Friday night at FedExPark. The win for Memphis (19-36, 9-14 American) sets up a rubber match with Bearcats on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
The go-ahead run in the eighth inning was a wild one. Third baseman Zach Schritenthal singled with one out to start the rally. Second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek then singled with two outs and Schritenthal went first-to-third. The Bearcats' right fielder tried to throw out Schritenthal at third but the throw was errant allowing him to scamper home for the winning run.
Schritenthal finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Grudzielanek had a three-hit game and also scored twice.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth when Trent Turner doubled to drive in Grudzielanek.
Cincinnati scored a run in each of the third and fourth innings to take an early 2-0 lead before Memphis fought back to tie it up in the bottom of the fourth.
Carrier smacked a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bearcats came back and retook the lead in the top of the sixth.
Carrier tied the game back up again in the seventh with a solo home run to left field. The long-ball was the first for Memphis since April 25 against Belmont in Nashvile.
Connor Alexander made his first start since late April and was solid, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
Colton Neel tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief before making way for Nolan Blackwood. The Tigers' junior closer tossed two scoreless innings and picked up the win.
