Men's Tennis Competing in NCAA First Round Friday
May 12, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Tigers facing Mississippi State at 2 p.m.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis men's tennis team (14-10) will face Mississippi State, Friday, at 2 p.m. (CT) at the University of Illinois in the NCAA first round. The winner of that match advances to a Saturday regional final against the winner of the Illinois/Western Michigan match at 4 p.m.
"This is an exciting time for any team, being at the NCAA tournament," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "Achieving some of the goals you set early, even with it being a long season, I'm just really excited for our guys. Ever since we got here yesterday, they've just been eager to play and are really enjoying the moment."
Mississippi State, the alma mater of Tiger assistant coach Chris Doerr, is 16-8 on the season and is currently ranked No. 21 in the country in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
"We're just treating this as another match," Goebel said. "I know coaches say that a lot, but we played a great schedule, but we really stressed that the whole season, so we hope with all of that preparation, we just try to play our A game."
This will be the third SEC opponent and the fourth top 25 team Memphis has faced this season. Memphis picked up road wins at Vanderbilt and Ole Miss earlier this year. The Tigers won at Vanderbilt, 5-2, and Ole Miss, 4-1. Vanderbilt defeated Mississippi State 4-2 back in April and the Bulldogs lost at Ole Miss, 4-3, on April 1st.
The Friday neutral site match will be the 19th meeting between Memphis and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs lead the overall series 11-7 and have won nine in a row against the Tigers, including a 4-2 win in Starkville in the last meeting between the two teams in 2014.
The NCAA match is the fourth in five seasons for the Tigers, but is the first appearance for a Memphis singles lineup that is made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores.
This is the third time an NCAA tournament bracket has brought the Tigers to Urbana/Champaign. In 2013, Memphis won two matches at the Ole Miss regional to advance to the national championship round (Round of 16) at Illinois. That Tiger squad lost to Pepperdine, 4-2. The next year, Memphis was again back in Illinois, this time for a regional. The Tigers defeated Drake, 4-3 to advance to the second round, where they fell, 4-3, to host Illinois. Memphis is 3-3 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
Live video and live scoring from Friday's match will be available at http://fightingillini.com/sports/2016/1/14/mtennis_livestatsvideo.aspx.
Tickets will be sold at the Kahn Outdoor Tennis Center starting one hour before each day's matches. Cost is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.
