Memphis Drops Doubleheader to UConn

The Huskies (24-18, 8-5 AAC) were fueled by a strong pitching performance by starter Anthony Kay in game one as they won 10-1. The lefty allowed one run over eight innings and struck out five batters.
Memphis (14-30, 5-9 AAC) scored its only run of the game after centerfielder Darien Tubbs singled on a push bunt with one out in the bottom of the third. The junior advanced to second after third baseman Zach Schritenthal singled to put two one base.
Tubbs, who finished the game with four hits, then stole third base and scored on a fielder's choice groundout by right fielder Jake Little. Schritenthal and Grudzielanek also had multiple hits in the game for the Tigers.
The second game was a back-and-forth affair after UConn scored five runs in the top of the second to jump out to a big lead before Memphis plated six runs in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. The Huskies rallied to score two runs in each the seventh and eighth innings and won 11-9.
Memphis' six-run inning was started when second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek reached on a dropped third strike with one out. Left fielder Chris Carrier doubled to score Grudzielanek for the first run of the inning.
All of the rest of the runs came home with two outs. Carrier managed to sprint home from second base on a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Then seven more batters came to the plate for the Tigers to account for the next four run.
Catcher Jason Santana had his best day at the plate this season, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Shortstop Jake Overbey had one hit but drove in three runs in the game.
