Starting pitcher Matt Ferguson tossed a career high 7 2/3 innings
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Matt Ferguson pitched a career high 7 2/3 innings to lead Memphis to a 6-2 win over Cincinnati in the series finale Sunday at Marge Schott Stadium.
The senior right-handed pitcher allowed just two runs on five hits in the game with five strikeouts. The only runs he allowed were on two solo home runs to leadoff the second and third innings.
Memphis jumped all over the Bearcats with a five-run second inning that included two home runs. On the day the Tigers hit three homers and the game saw a combined five long-balls.
Jacob Elliott was hit by a pitch to start the top of the second before Brandon Grudzielanek singled to put two on with nobody out. Colton Neel started the scoring with an RBI single.
Trent Turner provided a big blow with a three-run home run to left field. Zach Schritenthal then made the lead 5-0 with a solo blast to right field, just his first homer of the season and second of his career.
Cincinnati came right back to get on the board with a solo home run to right field to start the second inning. Ferguson responded well though and retired the next three batters in order.
The Bearcats added another solo shot to start the third inning as well, cutting the Tigers' lead to 5-2.
After a two-out walk in the eighth inning the Tigers called on Drew Crosby to get out of the jam and the sophomore lefty got a strikeout to end the frame.
Chris Carrier added an insurance run with a solo home run to left field in the top of the ninth before Nolan Blackwood worked a scoreless ninth inning around an error and a single to secure the win.
The Tigers will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face Belmont on Monday at 4 p.m. before returning to FedExPark to host the Bruins Tuesday at 2 p.m.
