MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team won the doubles point and never looked back against number six seed East Carolina (17-9) in the first round of the 2016 American Athletic Conference championship, Wednesday. Memphis won, 4-1, to advance to a quarterfinal match-up against number three seeded SMU, Thursday, at 3 p.m. In the case of rain, the match will be played at The Racquet Club of Memphis. If the match is outside, it will be at the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center on the campus of MUS.
In doubles, the Tigers (3-16) took off to early leads at No. 1 and No. 2, as the team of Hannah Sohn and Janina Berres jumped out to a quick lead at No. 1, and Gabrielle Paul and Kathryn Hughes at No. 2 doubles.
Sohn and Berres continued their strong play, and never trailed in their match, winning at No. 1, 6-2. The No. 3 duo of Marta Morga and Tara McElroy fought back from a 3-0 deficit in their doubles match, and fought to make it 5-2; however, the ECU pair closed out the match for a 6-3 win.
Less than a minute after the completion at No. 3 doubles, Paul and Hughes closed the door on the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No.2, giving the Tigers the all-important 1-0 lead in the match.
Marta Morga then made quick work of her opponent at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1, putting the Tigers ahead 2-0 in the team score. At No. 4 singles, it was Berres who topped her Pirate opponent 6-3, 6-1 to put Memphis in a commanding 3-0 advantage.
The Tigers defaulted at No. 6 singles, putting the Pirates onto the scoreboard at 3-1.
Hughes played a back-and-forth match at No. 2 singles, winning the opening set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5), and then broke serve on match point to secure the Memphis win.
At No. 1 singles, Sohn trailed 4-1, before winning two straight points, cutting the gap to 4-3; however, she could not overcome the early deficit, falling 6-4 in the opening set. She fought back in a big way in the second set, winning 6-3, but her match was ended in progress with the team decision already in hand for the Tigers.
