MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team is bringing some of the best in college tennis to the Bluff City this week. The Tigers will host the 2016 American Athletic Conference men's tennis championships at the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center at MUS, beginning Thursday. The Tigers are the five seed in the draw, which includes five teams ranked in the top 40 of the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
USF, currently the number 19 ranked team in the country, is the tournament's top seed and will face the winner of the 8/9 match between East Carolina and UConn at noon, Friday. ECU and UConn will be the lone men's match played on Thursday, squaring off at 9 a.m. on MUS Courts 1-6, weather permitting. In case of rain, the match will move indoors to the courts at either MUS or The Racquet Club of Memphis.
Tulsa (number 24) is the two seed in the draw and will face number seven seeded Temple in the quarterfinal round at 9 a.m., Friday. Number three seed, SMU (ranked Number 27), will also play at 9 a.m., Friday, facing number six seeded UCF.
Host Memphis will actually be the visiting team in its noon match on Friday. The Tigers (ranked number 38) are the five seed in the draw and will face number four seeded Tulane (ranked number 28), a team that beat Memphis in New Orleans earlier this year, 4-0.
Memphis, 14-9 on the year, is looking for another win to try to assemble an NCAA at large resume. Memphis has faced 15 ranked opponents already this season, sporting a 7-8 overall record, and played 10 of those in true road matches. The Tigers are hoping a return to the MUS courts, where Memphis won its first Conference USA Championship in 2013, brings some good luck as the team is well-prepped for the level of competition they will see in the tournament. Memphis owns four wins over top 40 programs, including road wins at Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
The Memphis roster has completely changed since that last tournament win on the MUS courts and Louis Asser, who plays doubles for Memphis, is the lone player on the roster who is not a freshman or sophomore. The young roster won their quarterfinal match last season as a five seed, upending number four seeded SMU, 4-2, to advance to the semifinals where USF eliminated the Tigers from the bracket for a second straight season.
In the rematch with Tulane, the Tigers will again face the top ranked singles player in the country. Senior Dominik Koepfer is ranked one in the country in singles, while teammate Constantin Schmitz is just in the top 100 at number 99. Koepfer teams with Chi-Shan Jao and broke in to the top 20 in the country in doubles in the last ranking period, vaulting 11 spots up to number 17.
