Mar 06, 2016 | Baseball
Chris Carrier went 3-for-4 to lead the Tigers to victory
STATESBORO, Ga. – After being held down offensively through the first two games of the series with Georgia Southern, Memphis got things going at the plate and came out with a 6-4 win Sunday at Clements Stadium. The Tigers will continue their eight-day road trip as they travel to take on Middle Tennessee on Tuesday in Murfreesboro before the two teams meet again Wednesday in Jacksons.
Georgia Southern grabbed an early lead after an infield single by the leadoff batter, Kent Rollins. He then moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt, went to third on a fly ball to center and scored on a passed ball.
The Tigers quickly got the run back as they started the second with back-to-back singles by second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek and first baseman Trent Turner. A perfectly placed bunt by catcher Corey Chafin loaded the bases with no outs in the inning.
The Tigers only managed one run though from the bases-loaded, no-out situation when Darien Tubbs drove in Grudzielanek with an RBI groundout to tie the game 1-1.
The Eagles got a pair of two-out singles in the second but Ferguson was able to work out of the jam and keep the score tied 1-1. The senior right-hander had to work out of several jams during the game.
Memphis grabbed its first lead of the series with two singles in the third inning. Right fielder Jake Little started the frame with a bunt single and designated hitter Andy Bowman dumped a one-out single into center field. Georgia Southern followed with a quick hook, pulling starting pitcher Brian Eichhorn.
Grudzielanek lined a ball to center field off of reliever Landon Hughes to drive in Little from third base.
The Tigers were able to add to the lead in the fifth after third baseman Zach Schritenthal worked a leadoff walk. He was erased when Little reached on a fielder's choice but an errant throw allowed Little to go to second.
Left fielder Chris Carrier drove in Little with a single lined up the middle to make the Memphis lead 3-1.
Ferguson wiggled out of another jam in the sixth inning when Georgia Southern got runners on the corners with two outs. The Tigers' starter allowed just one run on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings pitched to earn his second win of the season.
Alex Hicks came out of he bullpen to start the seventh inning and walked the first batter he faced. The next batter sacrificed the runner to second base and ended Hicks' day.
The Tigers turned to Drew Crosby out of the pen and after an error put runners on the corners he was able to get out of the tight spot with the 3-1 lead intact.
Memphis tacked on some insurance in the eighth after Carrier led off the inning with an infield single and Bowman worked a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Grudzielanek moved the runners to second and third with one out.
First baseman Trent Turner drove in the runs with a single to left field that scored Carrier and pinch runner Cody Duncan.
Nolan Blackwood entered the game with runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the eighth. The junior right-hander hit the first batter he faced to load the bases.
Designated hitter Kent Rollins hammered a double off the leftfield wall to clear the bases and cut the Memphis lead to 5-4.
The Tigers got one of those runs back in the top of the ninth. Shortstop Jake Overbey was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Tubbs. Schritenthal singled to put runners on the corners and Little drove in Overbey with a sacrifice fly.
Blackwood worked around an error in the ninth to record his second save of the season and the 19th of his career.
