Neutral-site match to be held at Jacksonville State.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis rifle squad competes in its final head-to-head match-up Tuesday, Feb. 9 when it travels to Jacksonville, Ala., to meet Mid-South rival Ole Miss. Tuesday's neutral-site match is set for an 8 a.m. (CT) start from Jacksonville State University's Gamecock Rifle Range.
Tuesday's match is Memphis' Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) regular-season finale.
The Tigers are ranked No. 9 in the nation, and the Rebels are No. 15. Memphis and Ole Miss have competed in four invitationals/opens this season, with the Tigers finishing ahead of the Rebels at the Ole Miss Open Sept. 30, Tiger Open Oct. 4, NCAA Championships Rehearsal Nov. 7 and Withrow Invitational Jan. 24.
For Memphis, Tuesday's match also is a final tune-up for the 2016 postseason. Following the Ole Miss match, the Tigers shoot in the NCAA Section Qualifier at Murray State Feb. 21 and GARC Championships at Ole Miss Feb. 26-28.
"We've had some pretty good practices this week, and we look to have some carry-over into Tuesday's match," said Tigers head coach Butch Woolbright.
Memphis returns to competition for the first time since it finished third in a tri-match with No. 2 Murray State and No. 3 Kentucky Jan. 30. Senior Beth Lee and junior Amy Fister each posted top-15 scores in both smallbore and air rifle, and Fister posted an 11th-place finish in aggregate score. Freshman Leighton Dempster shot a season-best 591 in air rifle.
