Slow Second Half Dooms Tigers Against Huskies
Feb 04, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Jeremiah Martin ties career-high with 11 points
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite 16 points from Ricky Tarrant Jr. and a career-high-tying 11 points from Jeremiah Martin, the Memphis Tigers were out-scored 41-20 in the second half, falling 77-57 to the UConn Huskies on Thursday evening.
Tarrant hit 2-of-6 three-point baskets and 10-of-18 from the charity stripe for his point total as Martin hit 3-of-4 from the field and all four of his free throws for his 11 points. Markel Crawford scored eight points while grabbing a season-high four steals, while Shaq Goodwin scored eight points to go with a team-best six rebounds.
"It was a tale of two halves, there's no doubt about that," said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "In the first half we were good for the most part and the zone was good for us. In the second half we had 12 total turnovers, we missed a lot of free throws and we were just lethargic. "
The Tigers and Huskies battled back and forth over the first six minutes of the game, with the lead changing hands twice to go along with two tie scores, as the visitors held a 7-5 lead.
The Tigers bounced back, and ran off a 10-3 run to lead by six, as the lead grew to as many as seven in the first half. The margin remained at seven with five and a half minutes to play before the visiting Huskies closed the half strong, cutting the Memphis lead to one at 37-36 at the intermission.
UConn opened the second half on a 10-3 streak to lead by seven; however, Memphis fought back, and closed to within four after an Avery Woodson three-pointer with 14:17 to play. An 11-2 UConn run put the margin into double-digits for the Huskies with 10:26 to play in the game, and a game-ending 8-0 UConn run gave the contest its final score of 77-57.
Memphis shot 39 percent for the game from the field, hitting 16-of-41 shots and 4-of-11 from long range. The team converted on 21-of-36 from the charity stripe, while UConn made 32-of-71 shots (45.1 percent) and 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from beyond the arc.
Daniel Hamilton scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and dishing out eight assists.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday morning, when the squad hosts the Cincinnati Bearcats in an 11 a.m. contest at FedExForum.
