Pair of 20-Point Efforts Lead Tigers to Win Over Cincinnati
Feb 06, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Shaq Goodwin and Dedric Lawson each record 20-point, 11-rebound double-doubles
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Behind 20-point, 11-rebound double-doubles from both Shaq Goodwin and Dedric Lawson, Memphis snapped its two-game losing skid with a 63-59 win over the Bearcats at FedExForum on Saturday morning.
Goodwin hit 5-of-15 shots from the field and 10-12 from from the charity stripe while Lawson converted on 8-of-18 from the field and 3-of-5 from the stripe. Trahson Burrell added nine points and eight rebounds off of the bench, with Avery Woodson scoring eight points.
"I'm proud of our young men," said Pastner. "They competed, battled, and had a quick turnaround. We had to keep the guys upbeat and positive. As you guys know there is a lot of negativity, and of course they hear it. We had to make sure to right the ship and navigate through some of the rough patches. We were in a rough patch, and the best way to get out of it is to win – and hopefully we get some momentum from that."
The Tigers out-rebounded Cincinnati 49-to-38, and pulled down a season-high 24 offensive rebounds, seven each from Goodwin and Lawson. Craig Randall II, Burrell, and Sam Craft each dished out two assists while Goodwin blocked a team-best three shots.
Memphis jumped out of the gate quickly, scoring first with a Randall running lay-in 2:10 into the game, and didn't trail in the game, marking the fifth time this season that the Tigers had led wire-to-wire in a game this season. Goodwin hit a lay-in on the next trip down the court, and a Lawson tip-in on the next possession pushed the Tigers to a six point lead.
The Bearcats fought back and cut the deficit to four with 13:36 to play; however, an 8-0 run over a span of just a minute - a run that included a three-pointer from Burrell, a jumper in the paint from Lawson, and a three-pointer by Lawson - put the Tigers ahead by double-digits with 11:19 to play in the opening period.
The Tiger advantage fluctuated between double and single digits; however, after a three-pointer by Cincinnati's Gary Clark with 7:25 left, the Tigers responded with a second 8-0 run, capped by two free throws from Goodwin, as Memphis took a 39-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Bearcats came out strong out of the break, as an 8-0 Cincinnati run cut the gap to seven over the first three minutes of the second stanza. Goodwin snapped the scoreless streak with a lay-in three and a half minutes into the half.
A 7-1 run for Memphis opened a 12-point Tiger lead with 12:28 to play; however, Cincinnati responded with a 9-0 run, closing the gap to three, four minutes later.
The Bearcats got as close as one following a Troy Caupain three-pointer with 1:52 to play, but a Woodson three-pointer - his second of the game - put the Tigers ahead by two possessions at 59-55.
Memphis hit its last eight free throws, including two from Ricky Tarrant Jr. with 14 seconds left, and two more from Woodson with seven seconds on the clock, as the Tigers iced the game from the charity stripe in the four-point win.
The Tigers made 20-of-66 of its shots from the field, for a percentage of .303, the lowest shooting percentage in a win for the team this season. Memphis also hit 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) from beyond the arc and 18-of-24 (75 percent) from the charity stripe. Cincinnati converted on 21-of-58 shots in the game (36.2 percent), while hitting 22.7 percent of its three-pointers (5-of-22), and 63.2 percent of its free throw tries (12-of-19).
