Tigers Fall Victim to Strong Second Half from Cougars

Shaq Goodwin and Dedric Lawson scored 24 and 20 points, respectively
HOUSTONÂ - Despite a 24-point effort from Shaq Goodwin and a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double from Dedric Lawson, Memphis fell to a strong-shooting Houston squad on Wednesday evening by a 98-90 final score.
For Goodwin, it was his second straight 20-point effort, while Lawson recorded his 10th career double-double. Craig Randall II scored a career-high 10 points, while Trahson Burrell also tallied 10 points in the loss.Â
Memphis out-rebounded Houston 36-to-29 in the game, as Goodwin added seven rebounds and five from Avery Woodson.

With his point total, Goodwin moved past former Tiger standout David Vaughn into 18th place in the school record book, with Alvin Wright and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway next up, sitting nine points ahead of the Memphis senior.
Houston shot 55.9 percent from the field in the game, including a blistering 69.2 percent (18-of-26) in the second half. Memphis hit 49.3 percent of its shots (33-of-67) in the game, and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from long range.
Memphis and Houston opened the game battling back and forth for the first seven minutes, as the teams were deadlocked at 14 points apiece. The hosts ran off a 7-1 run to push ahead by six, 23-17, two and a half minutes later.
Over the next three minutes, the Tiger defense tightened, while the offense started clicking on all cylinders, with the visitors running off 12 straight points, capped by a pair of free throws by Goodwin, putting Memphis ahead by seven.Â
The Tiger advantage grew to as many as 13 in the half, which capped off a larger 21-2 run, as Memphis led 38-25 with just over six minutes to play in the first half. The host Cougars fought back to close to within eight at 48-40 at the halftime break.
Houston scored the first four points out of the second half, but the Tigers would not relinquish its lead, and led by seven after Avery Woodson drained a three and a dunk from Goodwin.Â
An 8-0 Cougar run turned a five-point Memphis lead into a three-point Houston advantage, and the Cougars did not trail again, as the hosts iced the game by hitting 8-of-10 free throws over the final minute and a half of the game, in the eight-point Houston win.
Devonta Pollard scored a career-high 34 points, hitting 14-of-24 shots from the field, while Damyean Dotson scored 21.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, February 13, when the squad travels to New Orleans, to take on the Tulane Green Wave.
