Tigers Fall in Overtime Despite Three Double-Doubles
Feb 13, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Dedric Lawson, Shaq Goodwin, and Trahson Burrell each record double-doubles in Tiger Loss
NEW ORLEANSĀ - Despite three players that recorded a double-double, including a 25-point, 16-rebound double-double from freshman Dedric Lawson, the Memphis Tigers fell in overtime by a 94-87 score to the Tulane Green Wave.
Lawson hit 7-of-19 shots including a career-high three three-point baskets while also leading the team with three steals. Shaq Goodwin scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Trahson Burrell had 12 points and 11 boards. Ricky Tarrant Jr., playing against his former team, scored 19 points and dished out a team-high four assists.
Memphis hit 42.5 percent (31-of-73) of its shots in the game, and 36 percent (9-of-25) fron long range. Tulane was 30-of-64 from the field (46.9 percent), 44 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-25) and 69.7 percent (23-of-33) from the charity stripe.
Tulane jumped out quickly, and led by as many as seven at 16-9, eight minutes into the game. The Tigers fought back, and used a 9-2 run to knot the score at 18 points apiece.
A Lawson three-pointer with 6:14 to play in the opening period put the Tigers ahead by three; however, Tulane countered with an 8-0 run to push ahead by five a minute later. In a half full of runs, Memphis answered with a 7-0 streak of its own to take two-point lead on Lawson's second three-pointer of the game.Ā
Tulane came back and took the lead on a tip-in with 1:58 to play, and would not trail again in the first half, as the Green Wave took a 45-41 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Tigers started the second half strong, using a 14-7 run over the period's first five minutes to lead 55-52. Tulane fought back to take a one-point, 57-56 lead; however, an 8-0 run on a pair of Tarrant free throws, a three-pointer from Lawson and a three-pointer from Tarrant pushed the Tigers to a seven-point, 64-57 lead with 12:35 to play.
Memphis would not trail again in regulation, and led by six with 6:18 to play, but the feisty Green Wave squad would not back down, and chipped away at the Tiger advantage. Trailing by three after a free throw from Shaq Goodwin, Tulane's Cameron Reynolds drained a three-pointer with 20 seconds to play in regulation. Memphis' long attempt at the regulation buzzer was off the mark, sending the game into an extra five-minute period.
Tulane, who won in three overtimes in its last game, scored first in the extra session; however, Memphis tied the game on a pair of Lawson free throws. A Goodwin free throw gave the Tigers the advantage, as the lead changed hands seven times in the final period.Ā
The final lead change happened after a lay-in from Goodwin was countered by a dunk from Tulane's Dylan Ostekowski, who started a game-ending 8-0 run by the Green Wave.
Osetkowski had a 23-point, 13-rebound double-double for the Green Wave, while Malik Morgan scored 23 points, hitting five three-point field goals.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, February 17, in a 6 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
