Tigers Get Defensive in 17-Point Win
Feb 17, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Trahson Burrell and Dedric Lawson lead Tigers with 13 Points
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Five players scored in double-figures and two had double-doubles as Memphis held UCF to 31.7 percent shooting in the game, leading for over 36 total minutes in a 73-56 win at FedExForum.
Dedric Lawson scored 13 points - all in the second half - with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Shaq Goodwin scored 12 points with 10 rebounds. Trahson Burrell tied with Lawson for the game-high in scoring, while dishing out a contest-best six assists. Avery Woodson scored 12 points, including hitting three three-point baskets, and Craig Randall II tied his career-high with 10 points.
Memphis out-rebounded UCF 44-to-39, as 14 of the team's 24 baskets were assisted, with Lawson, Woodson, and Randall each giving out two helpers.
The Tigers hit 42.9 percent of their shots from the field (24-of-56), 5-of-18 from long range (27.8 percent), and 20-of-27 (74.1 percent) from the free throw line. UCF made just 31.7 percent of its shots (19-of-60) in the game, including a 22.2 percent effort in the opening half. The Knights were 5-of-22 from beyond the arc (22.7 percent) and 13-of-25 (52 percent) from the charity stripe.
UCF jumped out quickly, and led 6-3, three and a half minutes into the game before the Tiger defense tightened, and the hosts went on a 16-2 run over a seven-minute span. The Knights closed the gap back down seven, and trailed by eight at 22-14 with 4:16 to play in the opening half; however, Memphis closed the door on the first half with an 11-1 run, and held UCF to just one field goal over the final eight minutes of the opening stanza, taking a 33-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The 15 points allowed by Memphis were the fewest in a half this season, and the last time a Tiger foe scored less was on December 13, 2014, when Memphis held Western Illinois to 14 first-half points.
Shaq Goodwin opened the second half with two free throws to push the lead to 20 - its high-water mark of the game at that point - before the feisty Knights started to chip away at the deficit.
Once the visitors closed to within single digits - with 8:03 to play - before an immediate 8-0 run pushed the lead back to 17, as the Tigers hit six free throws during that stretch. A Woodson three-pointer with 1:25 to play put the Tigers ahead by 21 at 71-50, as Memphis cruised to the 73-56 win.
The 56 points allowed were the fewest since January 16 when the team topped USF 71-56, and the opposing field goal percentage (.317) was the stingiest allowed by the Tigers since December 22 against IUPUI.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, February 20, when the team travels to Tampa, Florida, to take on the USF Bulls in a 10 a.m. (CT) tip-off.
