Hosts USF Friday, UCF Sunday at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The last two Novembers have been good to the University of Memphis volleyball program. In both 2014 and 2015, the Tigers posted 5-3 records in the month of November to climb up and finish in the top-five of the American Athletic Conference.
That's what the 2016 Memphis squad looks to do and maybe even better when it kicks off the November portion of its schedule with two home matches at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse this weekend. The Tigers meet USF in a 7 p.m. (CT) match Friday, Nov. 4 and then face UCF in a 1 p.m. match Sunday, Nov. 6.
"We have seen our team continue to grow and play well the last few weekends," said head coach April Jauregui. "We look to build on that as we return to our homecourt this weekend.
"We are still working and focusing on improvement as we train. We know, if we can execute our serve-and-pass game, we can have a balanced attack which we will need against two strong opponents."
Indeed, the Tigers bring momentum into this weekend's play at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Memphis has won three of its last four at home, with the lone loss a hard-fought 3-0 decision to league leader SMU. The Tigers' three home victories were over Tulsa 3-1, Houston 3-0 and Tulane 3-2.
Moreover, Memphis played well on the road last weekend at Temple, dropping a 3-2 decision to the third-place Owls. The fifth and deciding set went the distance and then some with Temple winning 20-18.
Memphis enters play this weekend sitting just outside the top-five in the conference standings. Two teams that are in front of the Tigers, but within striking distance are USF and UCF.
In addition to moving up the league standings, the Tigers also have a little motivation as they fell to both the Bulls and Knights in conference play opening weekend at the end of September. Memphis lost to UCF 3-0 in Orlando, Fla., and 3-1 to USF in Tampa, Fla.
The two Florida squads, though, provide challenges for the Tigers.
"Both USF and UCF are very athletic and have a lot of power from the pins," Jauregui said. "We have to contain their attack.
"As we approach this last stretch of play, we want to stay aggressive and play with high energy. I believe in the progress of this team and know we are hungry for more victories this weekend."
