Match is Tigers' final one for the fall portion of 2016-17 schedule.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis rifle squad closes out the fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule Sunday, Nov. 20 when it travels to Jacksonville, Ala., to shoot in the Gamecock Invitational.
Jacksonville State is hosting the event, which begins at 9 a.m. (CT). Schools joining Memphis in the Gamecock Invitational include No. 2 Murray State, No. 15 Jacksonville State and UAB. The Tigers are ranked No. 13 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll.
With Sunday being the final match of the fall, head coach Butch Woolbright is looking for a solid performance that his squad can carry over into 2017.
"It would be great to shoot well this weekend since it's our last match for some time," said Woolbright. "A solid performance would give us some momentum heading into the end of the semester with finals and the holiday break. It's a long time until we shoot competitively again in mid-January.
"We love shooting in matches at Jacksonville State. Looking at our results from past seasons, we usually shoot well there."
Last season, the Tigers finished third in the Gamecock Invitational, placing behind Murray State and Jacksonville State. Memphis defeated N.C. State at the event for a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) win. In 2014, Memphis was runner-up at the Gamecock Invitational.
On Sunday, Memphis attempts to bounce back after a subpar showing at the Nov. 12 Buckeye Open. The Tigers placed fifth with a season-low 4632 aggregate score.
Although the Tigers struggled last week, Woolbright is positive that his squad will continue to improve.
"No one shoots great scores every time they go out," Woolbright said. "Sometimes you shoot well, and at other times, you take dips in your performances. That's the way it is in this sport. I'm confident we'll step up and our first opportunity is Sunday."
Despite its Nov. 12 score, Memphis has performed well against nationally-ranked opposition so far this season. The Tigers have an 11-7 record against opponents ranked in the CRCA poll. Included in those 11 victories are road wins at No. 7 Army and No. 16 Navy in mid-October.
In addition, Memphis has a 5-2 mark against GARC foes, including the road victories at Navy and Army. The other three GARC wins were over No. 14 Akron and No. 11 Ole Miss twice.
