Women's Basketball Hits The Road To Samford Sunday

Memphis will play on the road against Samford for the first time in school history
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With a victory in the home opener against Missouri State, the University of Memphis women's basketball team will hit the road for the first time this season Sunday for a 2 p.m. game against Samford. The game against the Bulldogs will be at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.

Senior guard Taylor Williams led the Tigers in the 69-60 win Friday evening by scoring a career-high 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the floor and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Williams also led the Tigers in assists with six and was responsible for a team-high two steals.

In addition to Williams, Brea Elmore also had a career-night against the Lady Bears. Elmore went 5-for-12 from the floor with two made three's en route to 13 points scored. After starting the game 1-for-8 in the first two and a half quarters, Elmore exploded offensively to finish 4-for-4 in the final 14 minutes of the game.

Freshman Taylor Barnes not only earned her first collegiate start against the Bears, but also had a very successful collegiate debut. The Memphis, Tenn. native finished with eight points and three rebounds in 30 minutes of action.

Samford leads the all-time series against the Tigers, 2-1. All three of the previous meetings were in Memphis; therefore Sunday's match-up is the first in Birmingham between the two teams.

The Bulldogs of Samford started their season off with a 62-57 setback on the road at Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs had four members score in double-digits, led by Hannah Nichols' 14 points. She was one of three players to hit three, three-pointers for the Bulldogs.

Samford's defeat was hampered by 27 turnovers compared to 10 by Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs did make 10 three-pointers and went 15-for-17 from the charity stripe in the game.

Mike Morris is the head coach of Samford and he is currently in his 15th season at the helm. In the previous 14 years, Morris had a 242-183 overall record.
