MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A team can go one of two ways after a long break from competition. The squad can perform well as a result of the rest. Or the team can be rusty and come slow out of the gates.
Head coach Butch Woolbright hopes it's the former more than the latter when his nationally-ranked University of Memphis rifle squad hosts UT Martin in a match Saturday, Oct. 29 at 8 a.m. (CT). Global Training Academy is the site for Saturday's match.
"Our practices the last week have been really good," said Woolbright. "We had some things we needed to work on during this off period, and I believe we got them fixed. Everybody's shooting well. I feel really good about where this team is right now."
The Tigers are ranked No. 9 in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, and the Shyhawks are No. 19. Both squads made moves up in this week's rankings, as Memphis was No. 11 and UT Martin No. 20 last week.
So far this season, Memphis has performed well against nationaly-ranked opposition. The Tigers have a 10-2 record against opponents ranked in the CRCA poll. Included in those 10 victories are two over UT Martin in the Ole Miss and Tiger opens.
In addition, Memphis has a 5-0 mark against Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foes, including road wins at No. 14 Navy and No. 16 Army. The other three GARC wins were over No. 12 Akron and No. 15 Ole Miss twice.
In their last action Oct. 9-10, the Tigers completed a road sweep with wins over Navy and Army. It was the first win at West Point, N.Y., in program history. Freshman Levi Clark led Memphis in both victories, placing second at Navy (1168) and first at Army (1169) in aggregate score.
"He's really come out of the gates fast," Woolbright said. "He's learned a lot. His practice scores have been excellent and that's carried over to the matches. Whatever he's doing, I wish I could bottle it."
Seniors Amy Fister and Jack Berhorst also have played big roles in the Tigers' early-season success. Fister has been in Memphis' top-two in aggregate score in three of the four matches. Berhorst posted career bests in both smallbore and aggregate at the Ole Miss Open.
"Amy and Jack are doing what seniors do," said Woolbright. "They are leading by example, and they also are sharing what they know with the others. The team dynamic is really good, and they learn from each other."
After Saturday's match, the Tigers return to action Nov. 5 when they travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to take on four-time defending NCAA champion and current No. 1 West Virginia.
