Tigers Fall at Nationally Ranked SMU

Shaq Goodwin scores 18 points in loss
DALLAS – The Memphis Tigers could not find an answer for SMU on Saturday evening, as Shaq Goodwin led a quartet of Tiger players in double figures with 18 points, in the 80-68 Mustang win.
Goodwin hit 7-of-15 shots over his 27 minutes of action, while Jeremiah Martin scored 11 points off of the bench – all in the second half. Ricky Tarrant Jr. and Avery Woodson each scored 10 in the losing effort. Dedric Lawson pulled down 13 rebounds while he, Tarrant Jr. and Martin each dished out three assists.
The Tigers converted on 22-of-67 shots from the field (32.8 percent) and 5-of-20 from long range. The team converted on 70.4 percent of its free throws, hitting 19-of-27 from the charity stripe.
Memphis jumped out early, leading 2-1 after a Shaq Goodwin jumper in the lane, before the Mustangs scored the next six points to lead 7-2. The Tigers climbed back within two as late as13:58 to play in the half on a Tarrant Jr. three-pointer; however, the Mustangs ran off an 11-2 run to push ahead by 11, and took a 39-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
SMU jumped out to open the second half, hitting its first four three-pointers, pushing out to a 25-point, 63-39 lead with 11:39 to play in the contest.
From there the Tigers started chipping away at the deficit, closing to within as few as 12 when Nick Marshall hit a lay-in with 37 seconds left, giving the game its final score.
Nick Moore scored a game-high 22 points while Shake Milton scored 15 in the win.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday, February 4, in an 8 p.m. tip-off on ESPN2.
