Memphis to face Kentucky, Murray State in Lexington.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For a second-straight weekend, the University of Memphis rifle team faces off against the nation's best. This Saturday, the Tigers, ranked No. 9 in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, face No. 3 Kentucky and No. 2 Murray State in a tri-match in Lexington, Ky.
The competition with the Wildcats is a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) match. Saturday's tri-match starts at 7 a.m. (CT).
On Saturday, Memphis head coach Butch Woolbright hopes to his squad bounce back after what he and his squad consider a subpar performance at last weekend's Withrow Invitational hosted by Murray State. The Tigers placed third overall at the Withrow Invitational.
"The team is starting to get back in its regular routine with class back in session the last two weeks," said Woolbright. "Our scores in practice this week have started to pick back up. Although we didn't shoot well last week, we probably need a match to get us re-focused.
"Not every team that was scheduled to shoot last week was able to due to weather. (No. 3) TCU and (No. 3) Kentucky were not able to make it to Murray State because of the weather. With Kentucky and Murray State there this weekend, it's going to be another tough match."
Last season, Memphis hosted Kentucky and dropped a narrow 4670-4654 decision to the Wildcats. In the match, Haylea Broughton set the program's air rifle record with a 596 score. Broughton (4th; 1168) and Beth Lee (5th; 1164) both finished in the top-five in aggregate score.
In last weekend's action at the Withrow Invitational, Lee was the Tigers' top finisher in both air rifle and aggregate score. Lee shot a 592 in air rifle and placed fifth in the discipline. Lee recorded a 574 in smallbore for an aggregate score of 1166, placing her 10th among all shooters at the invitational.
