Trahson Burrell Flirts with Triple Double in Narrow Loss
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis men's basketball team erased a 14-point second-half deficit, and Trahson Burrell flirted with a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists; however, East Carolina rallied late to top the Tigers, 84-83, at FedExForum Sunday.
Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 27 points, hitting 11-of-15 shots from the field, adding five rebounds, three assists, and three blocks, while Shaq Goodwin recorded his 11th career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and dished out a career-high six assists in the loss.
Burrell nearly became the third Tiger player in program history to record a triple-double, and the first since January of 2009 when Antonio Anderson accomplished the feat. Burrell finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high nine assists, while also adding a blocked shot and a steal, and committing just one turnover. Sam Craft netted a career-high 10 points, while dishing out two assists.
In all, the Tigers dished out a season-high 26 assists on 33 made baskets, while blocking eight shots and adding four steals.
East Carolina jumped out of the gate strong, making its first eight shots. The team's first miss of the contest came with 12:33 remaining in the first half, as the visitors had jumped out to a seven-point advantage during the early goings of the game. Memphis fought back, and used a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead following a Nick Marshall lay-in halfway through the first half.
After a Burrell ally-oop dunk from Ricky Tarrant Jr. gave Memphis a one-point lead with 8:13 left in the first half, ECU ran off eight straight points to lead by seven, and the visitors went into the locker room with a nine-point, 45-36 advantage.
After the visitors scored the first five points of the second half, and led by 14 with 18:22 to play, Memphis chipped away at the deficit, and used a 20-9 run to grab its first lead since halfway through the opening period.
Once the Tigers grabbed the lead in the second half, the margin never reached higher than three points the rest of the way, with every basket by one team countered by the other.
Lawson scored the last of his 23 second-half points on a lay-in with 1:44 to play to put the Tigers ahead 82-80, and Burrell converted on one of two free throws with 16 seconds remaining in the game; however, Prince Williams converted on a pair of free tries with 4.1 seconds on the clock, and Memphis' last-second shot attempt would not find the bottom of the net in the one-point loss.
After shooting 61.5 percent (16-of-26) in the first half from the field and 75 percent (6-of-8) from long range, the ECU offense cooled in the second half, and ended the game shooting 48.2 percent from the field (27-of-56) and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from long range. Memphis rallied to a 54.5 percent shooting effort in the second half (18-of-33), and made 33-of-70 from the field for the game – 47.1 percent.
B.J. Tylson scored 26 points for East Carolina in the win, and Williams scored 20 points while adding a game-high 10 assists.
