Goodwin’s Career Night Leads Tigers to Road win in Orlando
Jan 26, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Shaq Goodwin scored 35 points with nine rebounds and six assists in win over UCF
ORLANDO – Behind a career-scoring night from senior Shaq Goodwin, the Memphis Tigers jumped out to a 54-40 halftime advantage and never looked back in a 97-86 win over the UCF Golden Knights on Tuesday afternoon.
Goodwin hit 15-of-23 shots from the field for his 35 points, missing the Memphis record for points in a conference game by two points (37 by Larry Finch against North Texas as part of the Missouri Valley Conference on February 22, 1973). Avery Woodson drained 5-of-9 from long range and scored a season-high 19 points, while Ricky Tarrant Jr. scored 18. Dedric Lawson recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The point total moved Goodwin from 27th to 24th in the career scoring record book with 1,240 points. He passed Marcus Moody (1997-01; 1,206), former teammate Chris Crawford (2010-14; 1,223), and William Bedford (1983-86; 1,224). Standing directly ahead of Goodwin in the scoring books are Orby Arnold (1955-59; 1,245) and Dwight Boyd (1984-88; 1,249).
As a team the Tigers had 23 assists, the team's second highest total this season, hit half of their 74 shots in the game, and drained a season-high 12 three-point baskets for a season-high 52.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Goodwin led the team with a game-high six assists, while Lawson had five and Markel Crawford four to go with four rebounds. Memphis out-rebounded UCF 36-to-34, and committed just nine turnovers against the 23 assists. Woodson picked up a game-high four steals, as the Tigers had 10 steals in the win.
Memphis now leads the all-time series between the two teams 18-1, and have 18 victories in the teams' last 19 games within the state border of Florida.
The host Knights jumped out to a quick 9-5 lead through the first four and a half minutes of the contest. The margin remained in UCF's favor, as the Knights led by three at 19-16 with 10:59 to play before the Tigers scored 38 points over the last 10 minutes of the second half, kicked off by a Goodwin fastbreak dunk.
Three possessions later Goodwin hammered home another dunk, opening a 9-4 run that gave Memphis the lead for good in the contest. The first-half margin reached as many as 14 when Woodson hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds left in the half, sending the Tigers into the locker room with a 54-40 lead.
UCF scored the first 10 points of the second half, cutting the gap to four, before Woodson and Tarrant Jr. hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to push the Tiger advantage back to double-digits at 60-50.
The Knights kept fighting, closing to within as few as four points, the last time with 9:24 to play in the game before Memphis ran off a 10-1 run and never looked back, icing the game by making six of seven free throws down the stretch in the 11-point win.
UCF was led by Justin McBride who had 20 points to go along with five rebounds. A.J. Davis scored 15 points and pulled down eight assists, with Adonys Henriquez scored 13 points in the losing effort.
The Tigers remain on the road, traveling to Dallas, Texas, to take on the 13th ranked (AP Poll) SMU Mustangs in a 7 p.m. (CT) game, broadcast on ESPNU.
