Trahson Burrell Reaches Career-High in Loss at Cincinnati
Jan 21, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Burrell has 24-point, 11-rebound double-double
CINCINNATI – Despite a career-high 24 points from Trahson Burrell, and 18 more from Avery Woodson, the Memphis Tigers fell in a thrilling 76-72 battle with the Cincinnati Bearcats on Thursday afternoon.
Burrell hit 8-of-13 shots from the field and 4-of-7 from long range, while Woodson shot 6-of-9 and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, with the pair leading the Memphis bench in out-scoring Cincinnati's reserves 45-to-13.
"We played well enough to win, we had our chances," said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "We left it all on the floor. We couldn't get stops there late in the game and we also had some shots that we missed. We were scoring. We just couldn't get some stops. I think our big guys did a great job defensively. The problem was Troy Caupain and Shaq Thomas, they hurt us. I loved our effort."
Shaq Goodwin scored 13 points, with Dedric Lawson chipping in seven. Burrell pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the double-double, while Lawson grabbed eight, helping the Tigers out-rebound Cincinnati 35-to-29. Ricky Tarrant Jr. dished out nine assists, with Burrell adding five helpers in the loss.
Memphis (12-6, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) jumped out to a 4-2 advantage on a dunk from Shaq Goodwin and a pair of free throws from Lawson, before Cincinnati ran off eight straight points to lead by eight at 12-4. Woodson countered with the first of his three-pointers, running off a stretch where the Tigers made five straight shots, cutting the deficit to one after a Burrell three-pointer with 12:45 to play in the half.
Two possessions later, Woodson drained a three-pointer to give the Tigers a two-point lead; however, Cincinnati (14-6, 4-3 AAC) ran off 11 of the next 13 points to re-gain its lead at 31-24. A four-point play from Woodson countered the Bearcat run, which, following a lay-in by Jake McDowell and a three-pointer from Lawson, the Tigers knotted the game at 33 points apiece.
Cincinnati closed the half on an 8-5 run, taking a 41-38 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Tigers opened the second half with a running jumper from Sam Craft, before Markel Crawford drained a free throw to tie the score at 41 points each. Cincinnati countered with a second 8-0 run, pushing ahead 49-41 with just under 16 minutes to play.
Burrell answered with four straight points; however, Cincinnati pushed ahead by as many as nine points following a Kevin Johnson three-pointer.
Trailing by its largest margin of the game, Memphis rattled off the contest's longest streak, scoring 12 straight points, including eight points from Burrell to take a three-point, 63-60 lead with 7:39 remaining in the game.
The Tigers kept their lead until the 4:44 mark – the middle of a Cincinnati 7-0 run – and the visitors would not lead again in the game. The Bearcats iced the game by converting on four straight free throws down the stretch, while Memphis ended the game on a tip-dunk from Burrell, to give the game its 76-72 final score.
Memphis made 25-of-57 shots (43.9%) from the field and 10-of-22 (45.5%) from long range. The Bearcats made half of their 60 shots in the contest, while converting on 4-of-15 (26.7%) from beyond the arc. Each team made 12 free throw tries, with Memphis taking 16 attempts and Cincinnati 15.
The Tigers return home on Sunday, January 24, when the team hosts the Pirates of East Carolina in a 1 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
