Tigers Fall to 20th Ranked Gamecocks 86-76

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Memphis Tigers battled for 40 minutes with the 20th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks; however, the hosts pulled away late in an 86-76 physical battle.
Ricky Tarrant Jr. scored a game-high 20 points, while Avery Woodson scored 14, Shaq Goodwin 13, and Jeremiah Martin a career-high 10 points. Goodwin pulled down a team-high seven rebounds with Dedric Lawson leading the team with three blocked shots.
Tarrant Jr. went 12-of-12 at the charity stripe, his second game this season where he was perfect with a dozen attempts.
South Carolina made 46-of-63 free throws in the game, Memphis records for free throws made (previous record was 38) and taken (previous record was 50) by an opponent and the Tigers were called for 41 personal fouls, another school record (previous record was 37).
Trahson Burrell dished out a team-best two assists, while he blocked two shots, giving the Tigers nine total blocked shots in the game. Memphis hit a season-high 30 shots from the free throw line on 36 attempts for a percentage of 83.3. The Tigers also made 8-of-22 from long range (36.4 percent) and 19-of-61 (31.1 percent) from the field.
In a back-and-forth first half, the game saw 11 tie scores and nine lead changes, with the largest lead by either team coming the hosts jumped ahead by six with 1:01 to play before halftime.
The Tigers closed the half with back-to-back three-point baskets by Tarrant Jr., sending the teams into the locker room knotted at 42 at halftime
In the second half Memphis scored the first four points on two lay-ins by Markel Crawford, and did not give up the lead until 11:38 to play in the game. The lead changed hands two more times over the final 12 minutes, and the Tigers' last lead came at 59-57 with 9:48 to play in the game on a pair of Goodwin free throws, before the hosts ran off an 8-2 run to lead by four.
The feisty Tiger squad kept fighting back but could not get any closer than three the rest of the way, with the Gamecocks scoring the game's final six points, all from the charity stripe.
