First Half Run Pushes Tigers to Win
Jan 05, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Five Tigers Reach Double-Figure Scoring in Lopsided Win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A 43-4 first half run took a seven-point Memphis deficit and turned it into a 32-point advantage, as the Tigers cruised to an 82-46 non-conference win over the Nicholls Colonels. Memphis head coach Josh Pastner, with the win, moved into a tie for fourth place in the school's career wins list with 158, tying former coach Dana Kirk in the process.
Avery Woodson led a quintet of Tigers in double-figure scoring with 15 points, hitting 6-of-11 shots from the field and 3-of-6 from long range. Four others – Nick Marshall, Ricky Tarrant Jr., Dedric Lawson, and Trahson Burrell – each scored a dozen points, while Markel Crawford finished a point shy of the double-figure plateau.
"This was a good win," said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "I thought there were some positives that we had. I was really happy with Nick Marshall's play - you can see his improvement. He keeps getting better and better. Robert Kirby has done a really good job with his improvement. I thought Sam Craft came in and gave us good minutes. I loved the fact that we had 19 assists on 31 made FG and only nine turnovers. We held them to 35 percent from the field and 22 percent from three-point range and forced 27 turnovers. Coming into the game, we actually moved to third in the country in field goal percentage defense, first in blocked shots, 33rd in 3 point percent defense, and seventh in rebounding. So, defensively, we've been really good."
Lawson pulled down a game-high-tying eight rebounds, while Crawford nabbed seven and Marshall six, with Memphis out-rebounding the Colonels 39-to-38. Burrell dished out a career-high six assists, with Tarrant Jr. giving out four, as Memphis had a 19-to-9 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Nicholls came out of the gate strong, and used an 8-0 run to push to a 14-7 lead with 14:43 to play in the first half. From there, it was all Memphis, as the Tigers out-scored the Colonels 43-7 over the rest of the half, including runs of 13-0 and 26-0, to take a 50-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half the Tigers were able to unload the bench, as 13 players saw action and nine scored in the 36-point victory.
Also seeing his first action in a Tiger basketball uniform was Sam Craft – who less than a week ago was playing in the Birmingham Bowl with the Memphis football team – and the Memphis native scored five points while adding two rebounds and two steals in the win.
Memphis returns to action on Saturday, January 9, when the squad travels to Storrs, Connecticut, to take on the UConn Huskies in a 6 p.m. CT tip-off.
